Westbury Lumber, Red Creek, N.Y., submitted the winning bid to acquire the former 201-acre site of the Butler Correctional Facility to use as a storage facility for its hardwood milling operations.

Located adjacent to the wholesale hardwood mill, the low- to medium-security facility, which straddles the cities of Butler and Wolcott, opened in 1989 and closed in 2014.

The sawmill began operations in 1994, specializing in crafting premium-grade Northern hardwood lumber from responsibly, locally sourced logs and timber. Owner Jason Smith told the Finger Lake Times he plans to devote most of the site to storage and expansion, allowing the company to enlarge its current focus of high-end markets in the Northeast to customers around the world.
