Montrose Forest Products, Montrose, Co., issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices to approximately 90 employees as efforts continue to find a buyer for the sawmill and keep operations running. According to reports, company officials indicated that a transaction would ideally be completed by early November to avoid an interruption in operations and preserve jobs at the facility.
The WARN Act generally requires employers to provide 60 days’ advance notice of a plant closing or mass layoff. The notices do not necessarily mean the mill will close, but rather provide employees with advance warning while discussions with potential buyers continue.
Montrose Forest Products is one of Colorado’s largest sawmills and a significant employer in western Colorado. The operation traces its current history to 2012, when lumber producer Interfor acquired the former Intermountain Resources sawmill in Montrose and restarted the facility. In 2025, South Dakota-based Neiman acquired the operation.
Neiman Enterprises is a fourth-generation forest products company with operations across the western United States. In addition to Montrose Forest Products, the company owns several affiliated businesses, including Spearfish Forest Products in South Dakota, Devils Tower Forest Products in Wyoming, and Gilchrist Forest Products in Oregon. The company also operates related manufacturing and wood-products businesses in the Black Hills region.
