rk MILES, a fourth‑generation, family‑owned lumber and building materials company based in Manchester Center, Vt., has acquired Varney & Smith Lumber Co., a long‑standing lumberyard and building materials supplier located in Lisbon, N.H. It becomes rk Miles' 10th location—and first in New Hampshire.
Varney & Smith Lumber has served the greater Lisbon area for decades and has built a strong reputation for quality materials, dependable service, and strong relationships with local builders and contractors.
“This is a good fit for both companies,” said Joe Miles, CEO of rk MILES. “Varney & Smith has deep roots in its community and a well‑earned reputation for service. Our intent is to build on that foundation, support the existing team, and continue serving customers in a way that respects how business is done locally.”
rk MILES is familiar with supplying builders in ski and mountain communities and understands the products, logistics, and service expectations required to support that type of construction environment. As part of the transition, the company plans to introduce Marvin windows and doors to the northern New Hampshire market. rk MILES also operates a dedicated window and door service department, providing technical support and post‑sale service to builders and homeowners, and expects those capabilities to support customers as the business continues.
The previous owner of Varney & Smith Lumber, Ed Carbonneau, will remain involved during the transition period to support employees and customers and to help ensure continuity of relationships he has built over the years. All existing employees are expected to remain with the business.
rk MILES was founded in 1940 and operates multiple lumber and building materials locations across Vermont, western Massachusetts and northern New Hampshire. The company remains family‑owned and emphasizes local decision‑making, long‑term customer relationships, and community involvement at each location.
