HPM Building Supply, Kea‘au, Hi., is preparing to open a state-of-the-art wood treating facility this fall in Chehalis, Wa.

The Chehalis Distribution & Treating facility is a multi-year undertaking developed jointly by Murphy and Thompson. The approximately 36,000-sq. ft. facility on a 15-acre site will feature state-of-the-art systems for loading, treating and unloading lumber, giving HPM greater control of its treated lumber and building material supply chain as it continues to serve as a reliable source for professional builders and retail customers across Hawaii.

The facility's opening and long-term success is being overseen by newly promoted vice president of manufacturing and construction Colin Thompson. Effective July 1, Thompson succeeded Adrian Murphy, who is now senior advisor - lumber & vendor strategy.

Murphy's move marks the start of a planned, multi-year transition toward retirement—a shift that lets HPM continue drawing on his 22 years of industry experience and vendor relationships in the years ahead. Murphy joined HPM as a lumber buyer and, over 12 years with the company, went on to lead purchasing, products and logistics, and manufacturing He was instrumental in the 2023 opening of HPM’s West Coast Distribution & Consolidation facility in Fife, Wash., and the current construction of the Chehalis Distribution & Treating plant. In his new role, he will continue supporting HPM’s lumber strategy, vendor relationships, and major capacity-building initiatives.

“HPM is a unique company, and being part of a completely local, 100% employee-owned business has shaped how I have viewed every role I’ve held here,” Murphy said. “I’m grateful for the opportunities HPM has given me and proud to continue contributing to its long-term success in this new capacity.”

The transition also positions Thompson to lead HPM’s next chapter of manufacturing and construction growth. He will oversee component manufacturing, custom metal roofing, wood treating, the door shop, HalePlus (HPM’s factory-built program), and the company’s Washington operations. Since joining HPM in 2023, he has helped grow HalePlus and oversee internal construction projects. Thompson brings 22 years of construction and development experience, including running his own general contracting firm, Thompson Industries, and leading large-scale commercial projects for a Hawai‘i development firm.

“I’m honored by the trust HPM has placed in me,” Thompson said. “My focus is on building a scalable ‘HPM Way’ that unifies our manufacturing operations under a common set of processes, performance standards and operating principles—so every location delivers the same quality and customer experience while maintaining the flexibility to serve local markets.”

“Adrian’s leadership has significantly contributed to our company’s growth and ability to serve our customers,” said Adam Bauer, president and chief operating officer of HPM. “His deep lumber knowledge and vendor expertise will continue to be invaluable as he moves into this senior advisory role.”

He continued, “Colin brings the operational discipline and forward-looking mindset to guide this next phase of capacity-building investment. His expanded role unifies manufacturing and construction under one leader, and we are confident in Colin’s ability to continue to strengthen the product and service reliability that our customers across Hawaii depend on.”
