L.J. Smith Stair Systems has started up its new state-of-the-art wood handrail production line in Bowerston, Oh.

The fully automated, 450-plus-ft. line integrates cutting-edge technologies that double L.J. Smith’s capacity to more efficiently manufacture best-in-class handrails while also dramatically reducing order-to-delivery lead times.

“Our new innovative production line is the first of its kind in the world and further strengthens L.J. Smith’s position as a leader in the handrail industry in more ways than one,” said Craig Kurtz, senior VP of manufacturing. “We’re committed to providing our customers with the highest quality products more quickly, while also reducing waste and ensuring a safe and sustainable working environment for our employees.”

L.J. Smith’s wood handrail offerings include:

• More than 40 standard profiles in 8- to 24-ft. lengths

• Five standard species including beech, poplar, red oak, white oak, and soft maple

• Six premium species including alder, Brazilian cherry, American cherry, hard maple, hickory, and walnut

• Customized products available in any hardwood or softwood species that can be responsibly sourced
