Tupelo Hardware Co., Tupelo, Ms.—the store made famous for selling 10-year-old Elvis Presley his first guitar—is scheduled to close on Dec. 31 after 99 years.
The Tupelo City Council hopes to purchase the property to save the historic site from the wrecking ball. The store is a popular tourist site and is located about a mile-and-a-half down Main Street from Elvis' first home, now the Elvis Presley Birthplace Museum.
The timing of the closure was attributed to the health issues plaguing owner George Booth Jr.
