Allegheny Wood Products, Petersburg, W.V., abruptly ceased operations on Feb. 23, idling its hardwood mills in Hazelton, Kingwood, Cowen, Norton and Jacksonburg, W.V.

The owners had been trying to sell the company or secure additonal financing, but when those efforts failed, they decided to pull the plug on the 50-year-old manufacturing business. They cited market conditions, among other factors.

The move put more than 400 employees out of work.
