Boise Cascade has issued a 60-day WARN Act notice to workers at its plywood facility in Elgin, Or., ensuring “that all employees are aware that mill production levels could be reduced on or about Jan. 1, 2021.”

Although plywood demand—and profitability—have been strong, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality recently modified the mill’s waste and stormwater permits, endangering the continued operation of the facility.

Boise Cascade said of late it has significantly lowered its log purchases for the plant due to the possibility of curtailment caused by the change in environmental constraints.

“At the current time, we do not expect to have enough logs available to operate throughout the entire winter even if the open concerns with ODEQ are favorably resolved before the end of the year,” the company confirmed.
