Washougal Lumber Co., Washougal, Wa., is closing June 30 after 117 years with the retirement of owner Brett Scott.

According to Scott, the business is performing well, but over the last two years, as he neared his 60s and his wife experienced health issues, he decided it was time to close the doors.

The fourth-generation company was launched in 1909 by Scott’s great-grandfather, Ernest Dubois, a Vancouver sawmill operator. Dubois passed the business on to his son-in-law, Lloyd Scott, who 55 years ago passed it to his son, John Scott. John’s sons, Brett and Kevin Scott, took over in 1992.

Scott is holding out hope he can sell the building to someone who will continue operating it as a hardware store/lumberyard.
